2009 race features repeat champion, fast times and heat!

(Gregory Town, Eleuthera, The Bahamas) - The heat and humidity did not stop Floridian Ken Bots from defending his Pineapple-a-thon title at the 2009 Pineapple Fest. The triathlon started promptly at 11 a.m. as skies cleared and the waters of the Gregory Town cove calmed down almost as if anticipating the 400-meter swim leg of the race.

Teenager Jordan Bots led the way out of the water, as his team raced off to a sizeable lead. Dan Barnes, an individual entrant, was close behind and held his lead all the way through the 10-kilometer bike course. Nassauvian Gustavius Smith and eventual champion Ken Bots left the transition area together for the 5k run, but Bots would leave Smith behind and run down Barnes.

The 2009 race was the fastest field since the reinception of the Pineapple-a-thon four years ago.

Emily Bagwell, a popular figure at Bahamas Methodist Habitat in James Cistern, won the women's division in her first time as a competitor.
The team division was hotly contested this year, but the teenage group of Jordan Bots, Matt Barnes and Mitchell Feasel held off two female challengers – Laura Bartenfelder and Joanne Martins – of Harbour Island.
