Brown Ends Season on a High...Set to Wed in Oct.
This track and field season was a great one for Wemyss Bight's professional track and field star, Chris "Fireman" Brown.
On the 2nd weekend in September, he wrapped up his season with a bronze medal at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Athletics Final in Stuttgart, Germany. The completion of the IAAF weekend event cemented him as one of the top five quarter milers in the world.
Also this year he made the 200 Beijing Olympic final in the 400 meters, anchored the 4x400 relay team to an Olympic silver medal and recorded a personal best time. The silver medal win was historic as it was the first time that a Bahamian 4x400 men's relay team won an Olympic medal.
While competing in Germany, Brown redeemed himself as he defeated David Neville in one of the races. Notorious Neville was the one who dove across the line and won the bronze over Brown at the Olympics.
"It felt pretty good to defeat him but I really wanted to beat him on the big stage. During the Olympic final however I was not expecting for him to dive across the line. I just feel as if on that one day he got away with it and they gave it to him. I am a much better quarter-miler than he is. Nonetheless I look forward to competing against him and I know that I will see him a lot next season. Next season I will be able to prove that I deserved to be on that podium. Overall I thank God for allowing me to have a great season. "I was able to run a personal best time of 44.40 seconds, I am still 100 per cent healthy and I am in good shape," Brown explained.
Brown wants his fellow Eleutherans to rest assure that he is at peace with narrowly missing out on the Olympic bronze. "I want to comfort my home town and all Bahamians ...all of the support they gave me feels really good. It is good to hear that people are calling my parents and congratulating them. "I know for sure now that when I go to do battle I have the entire Bahamas backing me. I want everyone to know that the loss made me even more determined to keep moving forward," said Brown.
Despite all of this, Brown has one more goal to achieve. He is set to wed his fiancé Faith, in Atlanta Georgia, Saturday, October 25. "In my profession, it is better when your partner understands what your career is all about," noted Brown about his wife to be. "So I am very thankful that we found each other."
The Eleutheran legend was also pleasantly surprised after learning that he would be rewarded for his prowess on the track by fashion designer Peter Nygard, owner of Nygard Cay. Brown along with teammates' Andrae Williams, Andretti Bain, Avard, Ramon Miller Moncur and Michael Matthieu will be presented with $10,000 from Nygard to share. Also Olympic bronze medalist Leevan "Superman" Sands will get $5,000.
In all The Bahamas won two medals at the Olympics. The medal count was significant. It meant that The Bahamas with a population of 300,000 won the Olympics for the third consecutive time, based on medals per capita according to the IAAF.
