Cartoonist Stevie Burrows' View On The Ongoing Elizabeth By-election Duel
The Free National Movement (FNM) led by Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham and the Progressive Liberal Party(PLP) led by former Prime Minister Perry Christie are battling for the Elizabeth Constituency which voted on February 16, and resulted in 1,501 votes for the FNM's Dr. Duane Sands 1,499 votes for the PLP's Mr. Ryan Pinder. These votes cast on white ballots excluded protest votes cast on a coloured ballot which were in favour of Mr. Pinder. The PLP will be petitioning the court that these be counted with the potential of swinging the outcome in favour of Pinder.
Protest votes are those votes that were cast on a coloured ballot paper because the presiding officer was not satisfied as to the identity of the voter or as to his entitlement to vote because of a defect in the voter's card; an incorrect entry in the register; or the voter had a voter's card but his name did not appear in the register for the constituency or the particular polling division.
