Influenza A (H1N1) - 'Swine Flu'- pandemic alert raised to Phase 6

(Ministry of Health, Nassau, Bahamas) - The World Health Organization has informed The Bahamas, and other member states, that the Influenza A (H1N1) pandemic alert has moved to Phase 6. This means that Influenza A (H1N1) is spreading and is causing disease in many parts of the world.

The Bahamas reported a confirmed case of Influenza A (H1N1) in a visitor to The Bahamas on May 30th, 2009. Although many suspect cases have been tested, to date we have only one confirmed case. Despite reports that there are two confirmed cases we can assure you that there is only one confirmed case at this time.

As this influenza is virus new to humans, the Ministry of Health is monitoring the global picture very carefully. Currently, the vast majority of people who fall ill can be cared for at home and they recover without medical treatment.

The Ministry of Health continues to advise the public to put into practice influenza preventive measures such as covering your nose and mouth with tissue when you couch or sneeze, disposing of the tissue in the trash after use, and frequent hand washing with water and soap. If you are experiencing flu like symptoms, avoid contact with others, and stay away from group events. These precautionary measures help to ensure the protection of individuals, families and communities by decreasing the potential for spread.

The Ministry of Health will continue to follow the World Health Organization recommendations which advise that there be no border closure and no restriction of travel at this time.
