With Hurricane season about to kick off on June 1,  officials on Eleuthera are gearing up for Disaster Preparedness Week to be held from May 18 to May 23, 2009.  According to Island Administrator, Gary Knowles, the week will be used to alert residents to the upcoming hurricane season with a full schedule of activities planned.

On Monday May 18, a training workshop will be held for Shelter Managers on the island.

On Wednesday at 7pm at the Savannah Sound Resource Center a  series of Town Meetings will be kicked off, with an open invitation to residents.

Further town meetings will be held from community to community according to the Administrator.

On May 22 - A full drill  will be held with the Police and Fire department at the local Bayfront Park in Governor's Harbour to look at the fire fighting equipment available to responders.

An Eve of Hurricane Season Church service is also being contemplated for May 31st. Knowles said with a smile, "We moved the service from the Disaster Preparedness week so that we can get the hurricane season off and going in the right direction - meaning no hurricanes here, we want to pray them away."
