Why do we need your help?

Anyone who's been to Eleuthera will know this tiny, beautiful island is overrun with stray and unwanted cats and dogs. Currently the only affordable local resource to deal with this is poisoning and, as a result, each year hundreds of animals suffer agonizing deaths - both strays and much-loved pets alike. Of course, the stray animal population needs to be kept under control, for the welfare of the animals and also to make the island a better place for both locals and visitors -but how?

Pet Pals is a group formed three years ago by people who love Eleuthera and love animals. In November 2008 they underwrote a very successful week-long island-wide spa/neuter clinic with the Nassau Proud Paws team, and in that time managed to get 128 animals fixed. A lot of people took notice - perhaps even some oof those doing the poisoning.

Think about this: if 505 of those animals were female, each having a minimum of 4 offspring a year, 50% female, in just two years time our last spay/neuter program alone would have saved the island from 1,024 unwanted, hungry, un-cared for strays.

So why do we need your supports? Pet Pals want to organize another (bigger and better) spay/neuter session this spring - we know it would make such a difference to the island. There is a "per-animal" fee to cover the expenses of the veterinary team, and though it's a discounted fee for Pet Pals, we just do not have the funds to make this happen again. This is why we need your help!

In addition to stray population control, Pet Pals has a lot of other goals for the island. Education is a big priority: in addition to schoolwork the group runs the hugely successful annual Tarpum Bay Dog Show featuring animal welfare essay-and art contests for Primary School children. Pet Pals also helps finding homes for unwanted animals through www.potcake.net and in the long-term would love to get facilities for animal rescue and also and full-time vet.

Hundreds of animals have already been helped by Pet Pals, but we need funds to continue to grow and do more - please help in any way you can!
