Eleuthera Police Hunting Suspect After Escaping Detention In Harbour Island
Suspect is alleged to have had a weapon in his possession when police showed up to question him in relation to a fire in Spanish Wells.
(North Eleuthera, Bahamas) - Teams of officers in North Eleuthera are actively searching for an escaped detainee police have confirmed.
A Spanish Wells man originally from Cuba, but married into the community and well established within it, was taken into custody by police on Saturday August 21, 2010. According to sources, police had approached the man at his home in Spanish Wells in relation to a fire aboard a barge owned by the Island Block and Concrete company of Spanish Wells, loaded with equipment and supplies believed destined for a contract in Exuma.

The man, Avelino Avila, a former employee of the company, now said to be self employed and operating in North Eleuthera, is alleged to have had a weapon in his possession when they showed up to question him.
Police took control of the situation and arrested Mr. Avila who we saw in handcuffs and in camouflage type pants on the Three Island and Harbour Island Docks, late on Saturday afternoon. One of the officers also appeared to be carrying a camouflage type article of clothing across her shoulder as she assisted in escorting the detained man. Two of the officers were carrying weapons in hand, as the suspect was escorted to the Harbour Island police station.
It is believed that after 11:00pm on Sunday night, Mr. Avila escaped detention at the Harbour Island police station and is now being sought by police. Police did confirm the search was ongoing at midday on Monday August 23, 2010.
