BEC Chairman indicates a Short Term Fix is being attempted for Harbour Island.
BEC's Executive Chairman, Michael Moss, took part in an open interview with ZNS talk show host Chrissy Love on Friday August 20th, for the program Immediate Response during its scheduled "Family Island Friday" time slot. Chairman Moss who also heads the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas, fielded several questions including a few pertaining directly to Harbour Island and the Electricity dilemma residents are currently in.
The Chairman in describing the problems being experienced in Harbour Island did not delve too deeply into the transmission of electricity from the Hachet Bay Plant to Three Island Dock as part of the longterm solution to the island's problem, but did reveal that there were ongoing efforts at the smaller Plant based on Harbour Island which they expect to bring some relief to Brilanders in a relatively short period.
According to the BEC Chairman, the plant on Harbour Island currently has only two of four of its generators operational due to in part to a lack of proper maintenance. As a result the facility is currently able to provide only 60% of the needed capacity. The ongoing efforts, he indicated, are to have in place, by the end of August, one of the two offline generators which should increase the output and hopefully decrease the periods of dark on the island.
BEC is currently laying new seabed cables between Three Island Dock on North Eleuthera and Harbour Island, which includes a redundant line, as the preferred means of supplying Electricity to the island. As we understand it, this solution will require upgrades in transmission capabilities from Hatchet Bay to Three Island Dock that could take a much longer time to complete.
