No firm timeline from American Eagle on their pending return to Governor's Harbour Airport
Tweet
(Governor's Harbour, Eleuthera) Local Authorities in Governor’s Harbour told The Eleutheran on, Saturday, March 27, that the Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS) which went down, and seemingly led to American Eagle's March 2nd suspension of flights into Governor's Harbour Airport (GHB), was replaced with a portable backup system called a Position Weather Instrument, which would serve the same purpose in addition to having a battery backup option, allowing it to still operate during electrical outages.
A second issue being addressed, they said, concerned the fact that refueling services have been unavailable at the airport since August of 2009. According to authorities two vendors have been earmarked to begin providing this service once again in April.
Another issue, being finally tackled is the Security Sensing system around the airport, which was damaged in 1992 during the passage of Hurricane Andrew, and further damaged during ensuing storms in later years. This component is said to be one that is being addressed in partnership by the Ministry of Public Works and National Sensing out of New Providence.
American Eagle officials contacted on Wednesday April 7, 2010, did not confirm what issues were being addressed by the airport on behalf of the airline saying only that they were "airport issues". They said that American Eagle was in constant dialogue with Civil Aviation in Nassau and that there were several items being worked on before services would resume.
One official expressed cautious optimism about returning to Governor's Harbour, hinting at a possible timeline of about six weeks but without any firm commitment.
American Eagle Airlines, the regional affiliate of American Airlines, since the discontinuation of flights into GHB, has offered their customers a busing service between Governor's Harbour airport and North Eleuthera.
The airline had been flying into Governor's Harbour for less than 4 months after a 10 year hiatus before the abrupt March halt.
