Harbour Island Students Win Big at Art Competition in Nassau - See their work.
(Harbour Island, Eleuthera) - A group of primarily male students of the Harbour Island All Age School (HIAAS) led by their Teacher Ms. Julie Knowles travelled to Nassau in February to participate in an Art competition held at the Mall of Marathon in New Providence. The students, in their first appearance at this competition in its 12th year competed amongst nine family island groups, and came out victorious.
For their accomplishments they were presented with certificates of recognition by their school's administration and other officials who participated in the celebratory ceremony on Monday, March 1st, in the courtyard of the school. Making the presentations was June Cartwright, Manager of the Tourism Office on Harbour Island.
The ceremony was moderated by Ministry of Youth, on-island representative Mr. Martin Grant, who through his enthusiasm conferred a tremendous sense of positive motivation amongst the audience - primarily students.
"It is a wonderful initiative on behalf of officials to highlight the positive and to encourage through recognition, while rewarding all around success - academic or extracurricular", observed an educator who watched the midday event in the presence of proud parents.
The work of the students was shared with The Eleutheran by their teacher and is displayed in the gallery accompanying this article.
Principal Linda Moultrie-Missick described the competition as tough and expressed great pride in her students.
Ms. Knowles said that the group had an outstanding display of work that would compete strongly against anyone.
Officials present on the day, in addition to those previously mentioned were The Hon. Alvin Smith M.P. for the District who gave the keynote address, Chief Councilor Darrell Johnson, Administrator Stephanie Rahming, Senior Mistress Sylvia Pinder and Father Oswald Pinder.
