Harbour Island All Age, Jr. Girl Basketball Champions Crowned!
(Harbour Island, Eleuthera, The Bahamas) Harbour Island All Age Jr. Girls Basketball team was today recognized by their school for winning the recently completed Geneva Rutherford Hoyte Junior Girls’ basketball tournament in Grand Bahama. The games which ran from February 10 to 13, 2010 saw Harbour Island defeat C.R. Walker 27-12 in the title game.
The tournament which continues to attract teams from Nassau and the Family Islands featured inter-pool round robin play with cross-pool playoffs and the championship in a Senior Girls and Junior Girls Division.
Mr. Martin Grant, Ministry of Youth Representative, with vigor and enthusiasm, asked the audience to remember that their team traveled to Grand Bahama and captured the championship hence the moment was termed "The Crowning of the Champions".

Nine young ladies, one by one, came before the entire student body, staff and the small number of dedicated parents who were present. Included in the nine, was Ms. Lashann Higgs a highly regarded player who was also the only female member of the Boys Jr. team who last month were recognized for their victory at the Father Marcian Peter tournament in New Providence. As a result of her prowess on the court Ms. Higgs has garnered attention and according to Mr. Martin Grant, she has also been offered several scholarships.

The girls were congratulated by The Hon. Alvin Smith M.P. for the District, Chief Councilor Darrell Johnson, Ministry of Youth Representative Martin Grant, Administrator Stephanie Rahming, Principal Linda Moultrie-Missick, Senior Mistress Sylvia Pinder, other staff, fellow students, and parents.
It all came at the pinnacle of a couple hours of celebration at the School where several of the 360+ students were recognized and awarded for academic and non-academic accomplishments.
Coach Marvin Higgs was heralded for the wonderful job he is doing with the students. The Coach in his brief remarks thanked parents and school administrators for assisting him. He emphasized that he reminds the kids to take God with them and consequently before every game a prayer is said.
Teachers who traveled as chaperones to assist the team were Ms. Major and Ms. Joseph. The girls used the opportunity to thank their coaches and chaperones for taking them over to Freeport for the tournament.
This and the subsequent golf cart motorcade was all filmed by ZNS and is sure to be incorporated into the evening news and sports in the coming days.
