Male Teacher At CEHS Arrested and Charged With Six Counts of Indecent Assault Against Three Students.
Updated: Feb 14, 2010.
(Governor's Harbour, Eleuthera) - Eleuthera Police on Saturday February 13, 2010, officially charged, a male teacher (37) of Central Eleuthera High School (CEHS), a Jamaican national, with six counts of indecent assault involving three female students.
The accused, Mr. O. Clarke, appeared extremely distraught before Magistrate’s court in Governor’s Harbour on Saturday afternoon, but was unable to enter a plea.
He reportedly was seen, while in police custody, by a Doctor on Friday evening who had indicated that he had suffered a nervous breakdown.
A nurse of the Governor’s Harbour clinic was also present in court and the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
He was taken to the clinic immediately after his appearance in court, following which he was scheduled to be flown into Nassau.
The first two matters for which the accused has been charged were reported to police on Wednesday February 10th, with a third reported on Thursday February 11th.
At least two colleagues of the accused told The Eleutheran that they were surprised by the serious charges and that he was an excellent Electronics teacher during the more than two years that he had been at the school.
He was remanded to Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre (Pyschiatric Institution) for evaluation with a scheduled reappearance in court on March 10th.
According to one knowledgable source, Mr. Clarke's Bahamas Union of Teachers (BUT) appointed lawyer flew back to Nassau on Saturday lunchtime after the police assured her that whilst charges might be pending he would be flown to Nassau Saturday evening for medical evaluation.
