(Gregory Town, Eleuthera) Kevin Cooper, a well known Bahamian artist and long time resident of Rock Sound, Eleuthera, will be showcasing his new works at an upcoming art exhibition opening, “Into the Light”,  being held on January 31st, 2010 at the Glass Window Art Gallery from 12 noon until 3pm.  The exhibit will run until February 6th, 2010.

Cooper, in conversation with The Eleutheran described himself as the kid you would see sitting at the back of class sketching away.  He seemingly always knew what his passion was, but still didn’t go directly into it as a career.  Succombing to pressures around him, he first dabbled with engineering, knowing it was not what he truly wanted to do.  However, after moving to Eleuthera with his wife, Hope, more than twenty years ago, he finally pursued his true passion and has been painting professionally for nineteen years.  Cooper characterizes his work as being more impressionist than realist, and in terms of content he commented that he particularly loves landscapes, seascapes and portraits, especially with the incredible light in Eleuthera.  For him, Eleuthera has been an amazing backdrop for his creativity and has allowed him an unusual freedom to pursue his work, even on location where he savours the ability to create in undisturbed solitude.

Eleuthera has played a pivotal role in Cooper’s canvas subject, with him taking most of his inspiration from the 110 mile natural jewel.  He has taken some scenery from other islands, including Abaco, Andros and Exuma, but the majority of his works produced are from scenes on this isle of freedom.

Gallery hours are 12 noon to 4pm - Tuesday thru Saturday.  Refreshments with a light brunch will be served during the opening celebration of “Into the Light”.
