The Bahamas Amateur Cycling Federation (BACF) and the Gregory Town Pineapple Festival Cycling Committee collaborated for what turned out to be a successful ‘7th Annual Gregory Town Pineapple Festival Cycling Championships' for 2008. According to a BACF representative, Sylvia Russell the races were competitive and the cyclists from Eleuthera showed great improvement. Tim Sturrup from Lower Bogue finished fourth out of five cyclists riding in the open 32 mile division. Sturrup clocked 1:58 hours and was closely followed by Allen Miller from New Providence who timed 1:59 hours. "The course was a 'hilly' one so the visiting cyclists had to battle that challenge. The roads were also long and the sun was hot. The event proved to be exciting from start to finish. The juniors continued to ride very well, climbing over the hills like mature seasoned cyclists. Everyone was amazed at these young children who covered long distances. An outstanding performance was done by all of those who traveled to Eleuthera and the natives who competed," said Russell. Also from the open 32 mile division, the race came down to the last several miles as veteran cyclist, Byran 'Turbo' Musgrove (New Providence Cycling Association - NPCA President) showed where his experience paid off. As the finish line drew nigh Musgrove positioned himself for the 'winning move' and captured the victory in 1:50 hours. He was followed by Wayne Price and Sam Brown from New Providence who finished in 1:51 and 1:52 hours respectively. Lower Bogue showed off its competitive cycling spirit once again in the junior boys under 15 division. Riders in this division covered 24 miles. In the end Derek Sturrup from Lower Bogue placed fourth out of four cyclists in a time of 1:34 hours. He was edged out of third place by Justin 'The Jet' Minnis from New Providence in 1:33 hours. 2nd Carlano 'The Car' Bain was second in 1:31 hours. Winning this division was national champion Anthony 'Biggie' Colebrooke from New Providence who won in 1:28 hours. In the junior girls under 15, 24 mile division, Antinece 'Lillie' Simmons as the sole competitor from New Providence, completed her course in 1:30 hours. Shakoda Minnis won the girls under 12, seven mile division over Tatyana Musgrove. Eleutherans saw more action in the special BMX bike race. Carl Thompson from the host settlement of Gregory Town won this race. David Sturrup from Lower Bogue was second and Shawn Miller from Governor's Harbour was third. Russell extended appreciation to the BACF, the NPCA, The d'Albenas Agency Limited, Continental Air and The Gregory Town Pineapple Festival Committee for helping to make this year's event a great success.
