It’s Harbour Time – Friends, Family Reunite & Reconnect!
It was a fabulous atmosphere at the 2008 Governor’s Harbour Homecoming that took place over the weekend. This social affair brought together hundreds of friends and families from the central community, many living throughout the Bahamas and beyond - who took this opportunity to reconnect and reestablish their bond with Eleuthera. The festivities were vibrant and could not be dampened even by the persistent high cloud cover.
Fittingly, it all commenced with a church service on Wednesday, November 5th, held at the Wesley Methodist Church on historic Cupid’s Cay, one of many Landmarks in the Capital. Reverend Kipling Johnson, from the Ebenezer Baptist Church, delivered, according to Arthur Turnquest-Treasurer of the Governor’s Harbour Development Association (GHDA), “a wonderfully inspiring message, which thoroughly blessed our hearts and really encouraged us”. After the church service, a Junkanoo rushout was held, taking spectators and participants from Cupid’s Cay to the Homecoming site at Bayfront Park. On Thursday, stalls were open with DJ music entertainment, which went on into Friday evening, when a bulk of the visiting home-comers arrived on the Fast Ferry, causing crowds to swell.
The GHDA is responsible for putting on both the annual Homecoming and the weekly Friday Fish Fry at Anchor Bay. In speaking with The Eleutheran, Mr. Turnquest, was able to share some of the vision and goals of this hardworking, close knit group. “Much of the funds derived from these activities during the Homecoming and of course during the weekly Fish Fry, goes right back into our Governor’s Harbour community. We find ways how we can assist people who have medical expenses, also youths traveling with their schools – we also help many of our senior citizens who are unable to pay some of their bills, we try to assist wherever we can. Wherever there is a need in our community, we find that need and try to meet that need”, said Turnquest.
A Full Report including photos from the event will be in The November issue of The Eleutheran.
In addition an online photo display will be posted online at www.theeleutheran.com soon.
