Club sets high goals at first meeting

(Gregory Town, Eleuthera) - The best surfer is the one having the most fun and that meant eleven best surfers at the Eleuthera Surf Club’s first meeting Thursday, August 11.

Eleven youths from Gregory Town, Hatchet Bay and Rainbow Bay took part in the club’s informal founding day and jumped right into 2-3 foot surf at Surfer’s Beach.

Goals were set high and the club hopes to one day send a local surfer to compete in Abaco, where there is a national surf team and maybe even Florida.

Martin Hudson of Hatchet Bay enjoys a wave Thursday Aug 11, 2011. He has been described as having a lot of potential

Also among important goals set were to surf more, have fun, take part in community projects and meet at least once a month.

“We’ve got great waves just in our backyard, almost literally and it’s just too great of a sport not to have some kids developing, for some of them, great potential,” said club founder Tom Glucksmann.

Taking part in Thursday’s session were Gregory Town’s Enrique Bethel, Hatchet Bay’s Martin Hudson, Chara Saunders, Christian Bowles, Spurgeon Bowles, Avery McQueen, Ashante Culmer and NJ, Rainbow Bay’s Jacqueline Matera-Szczeniak and David Johnson who was visiting from Abaco.

The club is looking for members, surfboard, boogie board and wetsuit donations and volunteers for surf buddy/instructor or lifeguard.
