Finally We Have Fresh Water Says Rock Sound Resident
Tweet
(Eleuthera, Bahamas) Eleven years into the new millennium, the residents of Tarpum Bay and Rock Sound, the largest settlements in South Eleuthera, on the fourth most populous island grouping in the country, can finally taste fresh, non-brackish water from their taps.
It marks the end of a condition that, many admit, should not have persisted for the years that it had, through both political administrations.
“We’ve had a cistern over the years and have had our sink and flatware last for very long, but my son and daughter-in-law have had to change them out many times” said a lifelong resident of Rock Sound.
General Manager of the Water and Sewerage Corporation (WSC) in Eleuthera, Mr. Gregory Johnson, has confirmed that the tests are complete and water is now being pumped from the tanks at the newly constructed reverse osmosis facility in Tarpum Bay.
The two 250,000 gallon storage tanks on site, costing $600,000, were paid for by the Government and are clearly marked with the insignia of the WSC.
The plant is a build/own operation for General Electric (GE) who supplies water to WSC at a unit cost for the water.
The official opening was tentatively scheduled for July 18th but according to officials, it has been postponed to accommodate the Prime Minister’s availability.
Minister of State, for the Environment, Phenton Neymour, visited the facility in May. More recently, in the House of Assembly, he revealed that the plant is being powered by a private supplier of alternative energy in the form of wind and solar energy.
