Glass Window Bridge Rage As Hurricane Earl Passed
(Glass Window Bridge, Eleuthera) - As Hurricane Earl passed over 200 miles east of Eleuthera on the afternoon of Wednesday September 1st, the skies were blue but the Atlantic Ocean hinted at the size of the storm that had decided to move Northwest, paralleling the archipelago at what should have been a safe distance. As a result of the passage of the storm however, the glass window bridge, a strip that separates the Atlantic from the calm Exuma Sound by about 30ft, experienced 25ft sea swells according to NEMA. The resulting "rage" of water, towering across the bridge, endangered motorists and damaged the water main and electrical lines going north in the direction of Harbour Island - both since repaired.
Amazing photographs taken by Candace A. Burrows-Taylor a contributor to The Eleutheran, show the towers of water crashing across the bridge at about the same time that drivers are scampering across.
