HEALTHY TIPS FROM THE MARKET, ROCK SOUND
Smoothies: Great Nutrition for the Hot Weather
Tired of the hot, humid weather and need a cool drink?
Try making a smoothie! It’s quick to make, packed full of vitamins and a great energy booster. You can use whatever fresh fruit you have on hand. It’s great for bananas that are ripening too fast. Just pop a few bananas into the freezer skin and all. You can do this with most fruit to prevent them from ripening too quickly and spoiling. When you are ready for your smoothie take them out, peel them and put them into a blender.
You can be very creative when making smoothies because almost anything works Try strawberries, kiwi, mangoes, pineapple, melons, and blueberries. Smoothies have been around for more than 40 years!
If the fruit has been frozen first, the smoothie will be thicker and will melt as you drink it. Wonderful in this hot weather!
Nutritional Value:
Bananas: B6, B12 and folate for a healthy nervous and immune system
Blueberries: Vitamin A builds immune system, Vitamin C is an antioxidant and increases iron absorption, Vitamin E is an antioxidant and the fiber helps to prevent constipation
Mangoes: Vitamin C and beta-carotene (orange color) are antioxidants fighting free radicals, high in fiber which lowers cholesterol and helps to prevent constipation
Strawberries: Vitamin C, Potassium - A diet rich in potassium helps to counterbalance some of sodium’s harmful effects on blood pressure.
Cantaloupe: Vitamin A, beta-carotene, and Vitamin C
Pineapple: Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Calcium, and Potassium which is crucial to heart function and muscle contraction
Recipe Tips:
(For a full blender which will yield about 4 drinks)
* Fill blender about ½ full of your favorite fruit juice preferably 100% juice. Apple, orange or pineapple works best.
* Add 1 banana, a few strawberries, and if you have any other fruit just add a little of that too! Any combination works!
* You can add ½ cup of yogurt if you want
* If the fruit wasn’t frozen then add some ice cubes
* You can even add 1Teaspoon wheat germ or flax meal to increase the nutritional value.
ENJOY!
