Eleutheran Mr. Joshua Culmer - A Household Name.
In March we traveled to Palmetto Point, to meet with a stalwart of the Eleuthera Community, Mr. Joshua Culmer. Walking into his office on Queen's Highway, we could not help being struck by the foyer wall which was richly decorated with awards and plaques of recognition - an outpouring of love and appreciation from family, church, community and government.
Born to Joshua Culmer Sr. and Euphemia Sands-Culmer on November 16th, 1938, Mr. Joshua Culmer Jr. celebrated his 70th birthday in November of 2008 surrounded by his loving family and friends. He spoke of his family with a sincere passion saying, "I've been married for 46 years to one wonderful woman, never fooled around - I just read the Bible, and never drink alcohol and I've never smoked… and I love my family." Mr. Culmer got married in 1963 to his wife of 46 years Mrs. Agatha Carey-Culmer, who originally hails from Tarpum Bay, Eleuthera and together they have four children; Charles, Anthony, Yvette, Tanya and are also blessed with 12 grandchildren.
His Early Years:
"We have to set the example and lead by example."
While growing up in Palmetto Point in the 1940's and 50's as the youngest child with five older female siblings, Mr. Culmer recalled being very obedient to his parents and shared how important it was for them to bring their children up in the 'right way' with Christian values. He continued, "We got along well, because I respected my parents. If they told me to jump; I would say how high, Daddy, whether I disagreed with them or not. In school, it was the same thing. I was tutored by Mr. C.W. Sawyer at the Palmetto Point Primary School, and when I saw my teacher, it was like I saw gold. If he was walking on the street and he had his satchel, I would go to him and say, teacher, could I carry your satchel for you please - and I would take it with dignity.
The Full Profile Of Mr. Culmer is a wonderful read in the March 2009 Issue of The Eleutheran
