The Harbour Island Story, a 300 page documented informative and entertaining account of the historic North Eleuthera settlement has been published by Macmillan Caribbean.

This widely researched account is a must read for all Eleutherans and Bahamians. It is a very refreshing and meaningful look at the pivotal role Eleuthera played in the history of the Bahamas, written in a warm and thoroughly entertaining way, by authors who obviously hold the subject close to their hearts It reveals a whole lot about 'our' special brand of Eleuthera spirit, culture and character.

It takes you from the earliest days of recorded English settlement, through Pirate heydays and a glimpse into our history of free Africans, slavery and emancipation then right on into the prosperous mid-nineteenth century era; our legacies in boat-building, wrecking, farming, seafaring, surviving nature's fury and a reputation for healthy air promoting vitality are comprehensively explored and tied into the growth and evolution of the Harbour Island society of today.

Globally, culturally rich societies are well versed in their history which has been written or passed down through oral transfer and memorabilia. The Harbour Island story is one of our stories - an Eleutheran story, and well worth the read.

The book, written by Jim and Anne Lawlor was a goal of local historian, the late Dr. Paul Albury, who wrote The Story of The Bahamas and Paradise Island Story. In writing The Harbour Island Story, his daughter Anne and Son-in-law Jim, integrated some of Dr. Paul's notes, writings and his 'poetic prose'; they also conducted extensive additional research among sources available in Nassau, London, Bermuda and the United States.

The School of English of The College of the Bahamas is planning a Nassau launch in early October and the authors are planning an on island launch at Charles Carey's Art Gallery, in Harbour Island the week after American Thanksgiving.
